Curatorial Statement
ASIA SHIFT
Jisu Yoon, Curator, Researcher
The Research Department of the National Asia Culture Center (ACC) organises international academic conferences annually to explore the complexities and transformations of Asian culture deeply. These events provide meaningful opportunities beyond mere academic exchange, enabling a better understanding of Asia's various crises while seeking cultural solidarity and innovation. ACC's academic conferences have established themselves as a significant platform for Asian cultural research, emphasising the impact of ongoing research and discourse on society.
This year’s conference, themed ‘ASIA SHIFT: Asia in Crisis, A New Leap Forward’, seeks to explore how Asia can move forward amidst a complex array of crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, digital revolution, issues of human rights and gender equality, and matters of migration and refugees. Co-curated with the International Academic Conference Organising Committee, this event aims to transform Asia's various crises from being perceived merely as negative occurrences into opportunities to form new discourses within Asian culture.
The conference will delve into critical topics that examine the present and future of Asian culture. First, it will address the sociocultural impacts of COVID-19. The pandemic has brought about profound changes in Asia's social, economic, and cultural landscapes, and we will discuss how these changes have triggered new cultural expressions and innovations. Second, it will explore the role of culture in the context of climate change. The impact of climate change on Asian societies and cultures will be investigated, alongside suggestions for concrete cultural practices that contribute to sustainable development. Third, it will address the digital revolution and new cultural paradigms. We will examine how digital technology drives the dissemination and transformation of Asian culture and how these changes reshape community identities. Fourth, a session on human rights and gender equality will examine cultural resistance and transformation in Asia, highlighting the significance of these issues within the realm of Asian cultural studies. Lastly, the conference will consider cultural approaches to migration and refugee issues, discussing the cultural experiences of refugees and migrants and exploring cultural strategies for social inclusion.
This event will serve as a vital opportunity to discover new pathways for advancement amid Asia's crises and offer concrete directions for a sustainable future. Through this process, ACC aims to foster creative discourses in Asian culture and explore new possibilities.
